I point out that LLMs and most AIs aren't "programmed with objective functions" at all... & their usual black box opaqueness makes verification tough. GPT suggests unspecified "new tools & methods"...

& the training corpus should be #sentientist.
Oh shit 🙃

@sentientism @petelewis Great paper!
And yes, worrying about AI sentience seems a lot like having the entire fire department staring at me starting a hibachi, while a forest fire raging one town over gets completely ignored.

Chatting with my buddy #ChatGPT about how to persuade large numbers of humans to adopt #Sentientism. Their suggestions:

1) Provide clear evidence
2) Emphasise the moral imperative
3) Foster compassion 💚
4) Engage in respectful dialogue
5) Lead by example

Then... 1/n

It can feel like everyone is trapped by harmful social norms. That they can't or won't change even when "evidence, reason & compassion" point clearly in a different direction.

If you need your hope in humans restoring - spend some time with my #Sentientism YT/podcast guests 💚

Yep - compassion alone is not enough.

We also need a commitment to good quality evidence and reasoning.

That’s why the #sentientism worldview is “evidence, reason and compassion for all sentient beings”.

George Monbiot @GeorgeMonbiot

In all the fields I work in, I now see empiricism swamped by wishful thinking, and real scandals drowned out by empty conspiracy theories.
The world is dividing between those who accept evidence and those who reject it. I fear that the first group is becoming a minority.
