Terrible dead-ends:

1) X isn't sentient (when they are)
2) X is sentient but sentience doesn't matter for moral consideration
3) X is sentient & sentience matters but it's OK to still needlessly harm & kill X for my pleasure

Most of humanity is at 3). It's the most insidious 😢
