Louis Gough is a vegan sociologist interested in veganism, anthropocentrism and the interconnectedness of human-to-nonhuman and human-to-human forms of oppression. Despite being deeply sceptical about the capacities of human reason – and the notion of “reason” itself – Louis believes that it is irrefutably evident that, alongside humans, nonhuman animals are sentient. Based on this belief, coupled with an ongoing commitment to rejecting the harms and delusions of anthropocentrism and speciesism, he argues that the very least we can do is behave benignly and with humility toward our fellow animals and other lifeforms and the environments in which they and we live. Veganism is, Louis believes, indispensable to this.
