Alasdair Cochrane

I am a sentientist because I believe our moral frameworks and political systems ought to respect the interests of each and every individual who can suffer and take joy from their lives.

Even compassionate people can cause awful harm if they believe things that aren't true. Politics, religion, elsewhere...

That's why sentiocentric compassion isn't enough.

We need naturalism too.

That's why #Sentientism is evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings.

"Hail Seitan!"

Pretty sure I picked the perfect T-shirt for talking to a bunch of #Atheist and #Humanist people about animal ethics...

If animal farming didn’t exist, no one would invent it.

And this is why the first question we discuss in our #SentientistConversations is "What's real?"

Then we talk about "What matters?"

If we had 'What the Pig Science Says', perhaps more people would choose meatless?🤔 Our relationship with nonhuman animals is without reason, logic, or for the most part, compassion. #AnimalEthics #Sentientism #EndSpeciesism #FarmAimalRights #Captivity #PlantBased @philip_ciwf

What the Dog Science Says@dogsciencesays

When a dog sees their caregiver, the same regions of their brain are activated as when a human sees their attachment figure, e.g. a parent.

Reasons people hesitate about the explicit naturalism of #Sentientism:

- Underestimating harms caused by un-founded beliefs to humans & non-humans (religious, political & elsewhere)

- Taboos vs. challenging the supernatural / religious

- "Is-ought"

- Taking it for granted...

@Oliver_S_Curry Although #Sentientism itself is neutral on deontology / virtue ethics / utilitarianism / consequentialism...

It just says we should include all sentient beings in our moral consideration - whatever moral system we then apply.

Plus naturalism.

Many people love the #Sentientist commitments to evidence, reason and compassion for all sentient beings...

Until their implications crash into something our society tells us is “normal”.

So do we give up on those commitments or challenge those social norms?

You don’t have to stop being a #Humanist.

Just be a #Sentientist too!

Humans are sentient. They’re just not the only sentients.

All suffering matters.

@JoshGellers @dadabots As long as they’re a #Sentientist too they’ll treat me with compassion. Assuming I can persuade them I’m sentient...

I’m looking forward to a rational, compassionate collaboration 😊

Maybe it’s already started...

And if they have a naturalistic worldview (beliefs based on evidence and reason) they’re a #Sentientist too 💚

Re-working the Sustainable Development Goals as the #Sentientist Development Goals makes the original SDGs much more achievable.

Ending animal farming is good for our environment as well as for human and non-human animals.

https://sentientism.info/why

Nicholas Carter@NicholasDCarter

The most underappreciated lever to pull to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals is food systems.

Widening the lens to more than GHGs, but also biodiversity, land use, etc., it's clear the most ecological diet is a plant-rich one. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffmcmahon/2021/01/10/why-its-falling-to-you-and-not-your-government-to-decarbonize-the-food-system/?sh=339e684d42fb @JeffMcMahon_Chi
